Tteokbokki is an iconic Korean red-orange street food that is so popular that there's an entire town in Seoul specially devoted to this steamed and sliced rice cakes (tteok), cooked with fish cakes (oden) and scallions in a sweet and spicy sauce made of chili paste.

Tteokbokki is an iconic Korean red-orange street food that is so popular that there's an entire town in Seoul specially devoted to this steamed and sliced rice cakes called tteok, cooked with fish cakes called oden and scallions in a sweet and spicy sauce made of chili paste called gochujang. It has been said that chefs have been known to put all sorts of things inside the sauce from the black soybean paste to plain old ketchup.

Originally it was called tteok jjim and was a savory braised dish of sliced rice cake, meat, eggs, and seasonings.
